Former England striker Gary Lineker has owned a number of properties over the years, including a suave bachelor pad, a five-bedroom family home, and a swanky £4m home in the affluent area of Barnes

Gary Lineker once sold a £2.1million bachelor pad at an estimated loss of £400,000 to move into a £2.6m family home with Danielle Bux. The Match of the Day host, who waves goodbye to the flagship BBC show after 26 years on Sunday, has lived in various homes over the course of his life.

Lineker was initially planning on continuing to host FA Cup coverage and the 2026 World Cup with the Beeb after announcing back in November he would be calling it time on MOTD for their Premier League highlights at the end of the 2024/25 season.

However, due to the uproar last week after Lineker shared a social media post on Zionism featuring a rat emoji – which is historically considered to be an anti-semitic insult – it was announced that the presenter will sever his ties with the BBC altogether following this weekend’s showing of MOTD.

In a statement on Monday, Lineker said: “Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio. I care deeply about the game, and about the work I’ve done with the BBC over many years.

“As I’ve said, I would never consciously repost anything anti-semitic – it goes against everything I stand for. However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am.

“Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.” In the days since, reporters have frequented outside Lineker’s home in southwest London to gauge his reaction. But what do we know about the other homes Lineker has occupied over the years?

Lineker sold his £2.1m bachelor pad at a loss

Lineker married Michelle Cockayne in 1986, and the two share four children together in George, Harry, Tobias, and Angus. However, after 20 years of matrimony, Michelle filed for divorce from the pundit on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour” – later claiming that Lineker had caused her “stress and anxiety” through his actions.

A year later, Lineker started dating model, Danielle Bux, despite a 20-year age gap between the two. Two years later, the couple tied the knot in a stunning ceremony in Italy, as Lineker became the stepfather of Bux’s daughter, Ella.

As a result, Lineker sold his £2.1m bachelor pad at an estimated loss of £400,000 in order to buy a £2.6m five-bedroom, six bathroom home in Esher, Surrey, to live in with his wife and her daughter.

With regards to his scenic Surrey home, Lineker revealed that he wanted to move on from his previous life and settle in the country, although he didn’t want to be too far from his four boys. As a result, he and Bux settled in Esher.

Speaking about the area in 2011, he said: “Surrey is pretty perfect, after all, wasn’t it recently voted the most desirable county in the UK? That says it all right?

“It just came at a time when I moved away from my previous life and was looking for somewhere that wasn’t too great a distance from the boys or from London. Esher seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

“We just stumbled upon it and fell in love immediately. It’s a stunning part of not just the UK, but the world – gorgeous, lush countryside and picturesque little towns and villages with character, all of their own that you don’t find anywhere else.”

A charming area, Esher is located just 14 miles south of Charing Cross, and it best known for frequently topping the list of the most expensive places to live in the UK. For context, Rightmove say that the area had an overall average house price of £980,519 over the last year.

Meanwhile, the majority of properties sold in Esher over the least year were detached, selling for an average of £1,434,093. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £947,587, while flats fetched £456,744.

The High Street has a number of historic buildings, such as The Bear public house, which was built in the early 19th century to cater to coaches which ran between London and Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, the street itself is lined with cafes and upmarket restaurants which attracts a wealth of visitors.

Elsewhere, Esher Commons remains as an unspoilt walking, horse riding, and bird watching spot due to its luscious greens.

Lineker and Bux ultimately divorced in 2016, and it is unknown as to whether or not he still owns the property that he purchased.

A £4m home in Barnes

At present, Lineker currently resides in the stunning upmarket area of Barnes in London. He bought the property more than 10 years ago for £4m, and it has been the main residence where he has raised his four sons.

The house boasts an at-home gym, a massive kitchen, numerous bedrooms, a cinema room, and a stunning garden among other desirable features.
