Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham called James Maddison to offer his support after the Tottenham midfielder underwent surgery on a serious knee injury.

Maddison sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Spurs’ pre-season draw against Newcastle in South Korea earlier this month. He has since gone under the knife and is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2025/26 season.

The 28-year-old said he was “heartbroken” by the timing of the setback, describing it as the “lowest low I’ve ever had”. But he was cheered up by a Facetime call from his England team-mate Bellingham while he lay in a hospital bed.

Sharing a screenshot of the call, showing both of them smiling, Maddison captioned it “some fella, for one fella the sheriff.”

Maddison has injured the same knee that ruled him out of Tottenham’s Europa League final win over Manchester United in May. Having won his last England cap in September 2024, he is now facing an uphill battle to make Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Posting a picture of him with his three children in hospital, Maddison wrote: “Lowest low I’ve ever had. Heartbroken at the fact this injury has occurred at this time in my career. With the Super Cup tomorrow, the Premier League season on the horizon, the exciting Champions League campaign & it being a World Cup year for England it all feels very very cruel but nevertheless the ACL reconstruction surgery was successful.

“To all my close friends and family, your support and love means absolutely everything to me. To those of you who have gone out of your way to message on social media platforms in support of me and my recovery even when we don’t know each other personally, I appreciate you all more than you’ll ever know so thank you.

“And lastly to those of you who doubt, hate & mock. You truly motivate me to levels I didn’t know I had inside of me so again, thank you. See you all on the other side.”

Maddison joined Spurs from Leicester City in 2023 and was a key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side last season, scoring 12 times in 45 appearances. His absence has now forced Spurs into the transfer market, with new boss Thomas Frank keen to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

Tottenham, who will be hoping for a huge improvement on their 17th-place finish last season, play Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup on Wednesday night. They will then kick off their domestic campaign against newly-promoted Burnley at home on Saturday.
