Manchester United have spent over £200million on new attackers this summer but that will not stop the Red Devils from trying to land a goalkeeper before the transfer window closes

Manchester United are targeting a late swoop for Emi Martinez

Manchester United are still pushing to sign a goalkeeper before Monday night’s transfer deadline – with Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez one of their targets.

United boss Ruben Amorim wants an upgrade on Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, with Martinez and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens having emerged as the two contenders for the No.1 spot. It is understood Argentina World Cup winner Martinez is preferred because of his greater experience, particularly in the Premier League, which is why United are pushing hard for him.

There have been unconfirmed suggestions that Martinez has been left out of Villa’s squad for tonight’s Premier League encounter at home to Crystal Palace, ahead of his potential exit.

Villa would want around £40million for Martinez, while Lammens, 23, would cost United in the region of £20m, which is a major consideration for United, against the backdrop of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Martinez turns 33 next week and selling him to United would help Villa in their compliance with PSR and they are understood to be willing to cash in on their experienced keeper if a fee meets their valuation of him.

Onana, who cost United £43m from Inter Milan in 2023, was at fault in United’s shock EFL Cup exit at Grimsby in midweek, while Bayindir has also struggled in his outings against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley.

Former United defender Victor Lindelof, who left at the end of last season when his contract expired, is understood to be on the verge of joining Villa.

The Sweden international made 284 appearances for the Red Devils across an eight-year spell at the club.
