Ryan Reynolds issued Wrexham ultimatum as Premier League dream thrown into doubt

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been told they must act fast to reach the top flight

Wrexham have been warned they need to secure Premier League promotion this season or they could face years languishing in the Championship. The warning comes with Phil Parkinson‘s side sitting 10th following Wednesday night’s 2-0 home victory over Bristol City.

The result extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches and left them just two points adrift of the play-offs. Wrexham have experienced a remarkable resurgence after a difficult start to life in the second tier, representing another chapter in their Hollywood-backed rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

The Red Dragons have already achieved three consecutive promotions and whilst a fourth might seem unlikely, their recent form has kept the possibility alive. However, one observer remains unconvinced as former Premier League defender Curtis Davies has dampened their top-flight aspirations, though he concedes this unpredictable Championship campaign may present their best opportunity.

Speaking to the Second Tier podcast, the ex-Hull and Aston Villa centre-back said: “If I’m being honest, I don’t think it’s realistic. With all due respect, I don’t think it’s necessarily as easy to make this next step.”

However, he added: “But if they are going to do it, I think this year’s the best opportunity. We all talk about the Championship being an open league, but last year we had four teams that broke away at this point of the season and never looked back.

“Coventry are top and high-flying with Middlesbrough just behind them. After that, it’s anyone’s. If you’re in the bottom half and you win two games, you could end up in the play-offs. That’s how wild it is.”

Wrexham’s celebrity owners have made no secret of their ultimate goal to lift the club to the Premier League. Initially met with scepticism, they are now tantalisingly close to achieving this ambition.

Earlier this year, Mac said: “That’s the way the pyramid is set up and why not us? Why should that be reserved for other towns, for other cities? It doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy and it doesn’t mean that it’s just going to happen quickly.

“It could take many, many years for it to happen. We’re going to make a push to do it as quickly as possible, because we don’t know any other way to do it, but we’re going to do it the right way.”

After a summer where Parkinson was heavily backed by the owners, splashing out £33million on fresh talent, the club’s chief executive, Michael Williamson, has confirmed additional funds will be available in the January transfer window. However, Parkinson has indicated there won’t be as many new arrivals this time, after previously bringing in 13 new faces.

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Parkinson said: “We’ll monitor the injury situation, but we made a lot of changes in the summer and I feel we’re only just getting a settled feel in the building.

“We won’t be making too many changes in the January window. We want to continue to work with the players we’ve got. When you bring in 13 players, that’s a big turnaround.”
