Manchester United’s players still believed in Ruben Amorim with many of them unhappy that he was sacked on Monday as the hierarchy made the decision without any consultation
Most of the Manchester United dressing room are said to have been left unhappy that Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday morning, with many of them still backing the Portuguese head coach.
His 14-month reign was bought to an end less than 24 hours after the draw at Leeds, but owed to a power struggle behind the scenes. Whilst key members of the hierarchy had their issues with Amorim, the players very much still had confidence in him.
United players were told of Amorim’s departure on Monday morning but The Sun claims that many of the players felt his sacking had been coming for a few days. A large number of United players expressed their gratitude to Amorim on their social media accounts in the hours following his sacking – which hasn’t always been the case when managers have left Old Trafford.
There had been signs of improvements under the Portuguese boss. The win at Liverpool was a landmark moment whilst they had beaten the likes of Newcastle. Equally there had been low points, drawing at home with West Ham and Wolves, but the players had continued to believe in what Amorim was offering.

That said, it has emerged that there was a confrontation between Amorim and Lisandro Martinez, which led to the pair squaring up. The Argentine felt he was ready to start and thought that the Portuguese head coach was neglecting him. He would later return to the XI and wear the captain’s armband.
Unlike with previous managerial dismissals in Manchester, the players were not consulted about Amorim’s position before the decision was taken. The Ineos hierarchy made the decision themselves, which has put more heat on their next call in the dugout.
Ultimately it is believed that his press conference at Elland Road was the final straw. He hinted at numerous frustrations, which centred around a desire for more power and influence. Amorim also claimed he was already looking to the time when he left Manchester once his contract expired.
Gary Neville insists that no one has come out of the Amorim fallout looking good. He said: “When a manager is sacked, it’s a poor reflection on everybody. It means it’s not worked.
“Ultimately everyone loses, particularly when you are sacking a manager partway through the season. It’s very difficult to get an adequate replacement in.
“I am surprised it’s happened this morning, I’m not surprised it’s happened. I didn’t realise it would happen so quickly. I did think they’d get through another couple of weeks and try and work out what to do.”
