Packers Could Seek 2 First-Rounders For Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is the subject of trade rumors for the second straight offseason. Weeks before the Super Bowl, there are already reports that the Green Bay Packers might listen to offers for their future Hall of Fame quarterback.

If Rodgers truly becomes available in a trade, several suitors are expected to make a serious offer to the Packers. What would Green Bay’s asking price be for the four-time MVP?

NBC Sports’ Peter King believes that the Packers would want at least two first-round draft picks for Rodgers. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that an Aaron Rodgers trade would cost a team at least a first-round pick and probably more.

One year ago, the Denver Broncos traded quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round rounder for Russell Wilson and a fourth-rounder. When the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions swapped Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford two years ago, L.A. also had to kick in to first-round and third-round picks.

Rodgers has a better resume than both Wilson and Stafford. Even coming off a mediocre 2022 campaign by his standards, the Packers quarterback is among the best players at his positions. Rodgers is only a season removed from winning his second straight MVP award.

Rodgers’ age and contract could prevent the Packers from getting the kind of haul that the Seahawks received in exchange for Wilson. Any team that trades for Rodgers will owe the quarterback a salary just south of $60 million during the 2023 season, during which he will celebrate his 40th birthday. Rodgers is owed more than $49 million for the 2024 season if he’s still on a team’s roster a few days after the Super Bowl.

The Packers were one of the most disappointing teams in the 2022 season, going 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. Rodgers’ 91.1 passer rating was his worst mark ever as a starter, and his 12 interceptions were his highest total since 2008.

The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders have been speculated as being among the teams that might try to trade for Rodgers in the 2023 offseason.
