KEY POINTS

  • The packaging didn’t ‘adequately’ note the presence of all allergens
  • The products were sold at Daiso stores across six states in the U.S.
  • Customers may return the product to any Daiso store for a full refund

Japanese dollar store Daiso has recalled various snacks sold in several states across the U.S. because of concerns over undeclared allergens.

The problem with the recalled products is that their packaging “did not adequately disclose the presence of all allergens,” according to the announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

Specifically, the recalled MEITO Powdered Apple Tea 4packs (SKU 4902757413606), Potato crackers with small sardines 46g (SKU 4901053077376), and ITOSEIKA Chocolate chip cookies 10 pieces (SKU 4901050137172) are being recalled over undeclared milk.

The other two recalled products, the Katoseika Chocolat Orange Candy 60g (4901580002315) and KANRO Pure gummy Petit trigonal pyramid grape 17g 3 pieces (SKU 4901351055489) are being pulled over undeclared soybeans.

According to the announcement, the recalled snacks were sold at Daiso stores in California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, New York, and New Jersey. Daiso California has removed the products from shelves. Sale of them has so far been “suspended.”

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soybeans and milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the recall noted.

Indeed, both milk and soybeans are among the most common food allergens that have specific labeling requirements to make it easier for those with allergies or sensitivity to avoid foods that contain them.

As the FDA noted, despite the prevention and therapeutic strategies for food allergies, they so far “cannot be cured.” And among the key ways of managing food allergies and preventing “serious health consequences” is knowing which foods to avoid.

“People with food allergies should read labels and avoid the foods they are allergic to,” noted the FDA. “The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food.”

So far, there have been no reports of allergic reactions related to the products.

Customers who find that they are in possession of a recalled product may take them back to “any Daiso store,” where they can get a full refund.

Those with questions may contact the company at 833-888-1610.

Only recently, Daiso also recalled the Matsunaga Mini Shiruko Sand Biscuits (SKU 4902773016966) over undeclared soy.
