The accident took place in southeast Delhi.

New Delhi:

One person has died and four others injured in a multiple-vehicle collision in southeast Delhi’s New Friends Colony on Wednesday evening.

A DTC cluster bus hit several vehicles, which left an auto driver dead and four injured with two in serious condition, one of whom required a leg amputation, police said. The bus was travelling from Nehru Place towards Maharani Bagh to Masihgarh Chowk.

The accident occurred around 4:45pm when one of the brakes of the DTC bus (route number 534, Mehrauli – Anand Vihar) failed while it was crossing the New Friends Colony area, initial investigations by police revealed.

On-ground visuals show the pile-up of the mangled cab atop a damaged two-wheeler, as well as the wrecked front of the bus.

While trying to take a left towards Ashram, the bus hit five vehicles one after the other, which included a WagonR, Hyundai, a taxi, and a two-wheeler, said South East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Deo.

The driver of the WagonR was not injured, while his co-passenger, a doctor in the Holy Family Hospital, sustained injuries. Two other passengers in the car were also injured, while the driver of the two-wheeler was in serious condition, the official added.

The driver of the DTC bus fled the spot after the accident, but was traced and arrested by police. He has been identified as Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Mandoli extension, according to police.
