Police in Hamilton, Ont., have charged an individual with assault causing bodily harm and several other charges, after a female with a severe peanut allergy was slapped in the face with peanut butter at a local high school. The victim was taken to hospital.
“Hamilton Police Service received a report of an assault on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, that took place at Sherwood Secondary School,” the police said in a press release shared with the National Post in response to an email.

“During the incident the victim had her face slapped by a hand covered in peanut butter before the suspect fled the school. The victim is severely allergic to peanut butter and used her epi-pen but still suffered an allergic reaction and was transported to hospital,” police said.
“The suspect was subsequently arrested and released on an undertaking,” the police said, referring to a promise to appear in court. “The individual has been charged with assault cause bodily harm, criminal harassment, (and) administering a noxious substance with intent to endanger life or cause bodily harm.”

Sherwood Secondary School is located at 75 Palmer Rd. on the east end of Hamilton Mountain in Hamilton, Ont. In 2022, the school moved from its original site, 25 High St., to the Palmer Road location to conduct renovations on the original building. Enrolment in 2021 was 1,275 students.
Hamilton Police confirmed that both the victim and the accused are under 18 years of age, but did not say if they were students at the school. “In order to protect the privacy of the minors involved, we will not be providing more information on the incident,” they said.
A spokesperson for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board declined to give a comment to the Post and said in an email response that any inquires should be directed to the police.
