The captaincy situation in Mumbai Indians has been a major point of discussion among both fans and experts in the ongoing IPL 2024. Hardik Pandya ended Rohit Sharma‘s ten-year tenure as MI skipper after completing a move from Gujarat Titans but the decision was not taken well by a section of the fanbase. Things did not improve as MI slumped to three consecutive defeats at the start of the new season and Hardik was even booed by a section of the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.
However, Australia legend Brett Lee believes that MI are traditional slow starters in the tournament and backed the five-time champions will pick up momentum as Hardik and Rohit start gaining confidence.
“Based on my observations, it’s evident that both Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have garnered strong backing from their teammates in the IPL. Delving into the history of the Mumbai Indians, it’s notable that they often start off matches at a measured pace, gradually building momentum. However, once either Rohit or Hardik finds their rhythm, their performances tend to escalate rapidly, driving the team towards success,” Lee told Times of India.
Lee also said that it does not matter whether it is Hardik, Rohit or someone leading MI in the competition as both players enjoyed a big following among their teammates and they are capable of inspiring and elevating the standard of their performances.
“Consequently, I find myself reassured, regardless of whether it’s Rohit or Hardik, or anyone else leading the charge for the team, as both possess the capability to inspire and elevate their teammates to greater heights,” the former Australian cricket team pacer added.
MI were beaten by CSK in their last match and they will be looking to bounce back as they take on Punjab Kings in a crucial encounter on Thursday.
