Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a recent podcast that he had considered resigning due to challenges in his marriage.

Trudeau appeared on an episode of ReThinking Tuesday, during which psychologist and host Adam Grant asked the prime minister how often he thinks about quitting. Grant asks the question at the 18:28-minute mark.

“There was a moment last year as I was facing some difficulties in my marriage where I really wondered, OK, is there a path (out)?” Trudeau said.

“I just realized that’s not me. There is so much to do still,” he continued.

Earlier in the episode, Grant asked Trudeau to clarify recent comments he made in an interview with Radio-Canada in March, in which he said he thinks about quitting every day.

Trudeau told Grant that those comments were meant to convey how he regularly “checks in with himself” to ensure he is still passionate about the role, not that he is contemplating quitting.

However, Trudeau did acknowledge his current lack of popularity and Canadians increasing desire to see him step down when Grant questioned him about how he handles criticism.

“No matter how much they dislike me, I still have to try and think about what I can do to make sure that (Canadians), or their kids or their community, is doing better,” he said.

Trudeau’s personal approval rating has been on the decline, and the governing Liberals are behind the opposition Conservatives. According to the Angus Reid Institute’s Trudeau Tracker, last updated in April 2024, only 28 per cent of Canadians approve of Trudeau as prime minister, while 66 per cent disapprove of him as prime minister.

Trudeau’s appearance on the podcast is part of the Liberals’ concerted effort to win over younger voters, according to the CBC.

The youth vote helped Trudeau win the 2015 federal election. However, a recent survey from Abacus Data found that voters in those younger demographics are leaning decisively toward Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party of Canada.
