A Canadian woman is under investigation in Cancun, Mexico, for allegedly abandoning two girls under the age of three on a street corner in the Mexican city.

According to the web site Riviera Maya News, several witnesses saw the woman leave a baby and a toddler on a street corner before running away. Members of the state’s Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence responded to the report, and the children remain in state care, the news site said.

Police arrested the woman a few blocks away. They said the woman and children had been identified as Canadian but did not release further information. The woman’s name, age and hometown are not known, nor whether she is a resident of Cancun or a visitor.

According to police, she said she left the children on the corner because she does not have the financial means to take care of them.

Marisol Sendo Rodríguez, director of the Cancun office of the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family,  said both children remain in protective care after being rescued from a corner on Tulum Avenue on June 26. The area is a busy shopping district about two kilometres from the marina in the seaside city.

“The girls are fine. They were sheltered with us in the Temporary Assistance House, they are fine. Investigations are being carried out and, at first glance, the girls do not show any signs of abuse, but all the corresponding procedures are being carried out,” Rodríguez reported.

She added that the agency is looking for additional family members while the woman undergoes psychological testing. “If they have a support network, then obviously all the investigations are carried out and if it is viable, they can keep the children.”

With a population of about 900,000, Cancun plays host to more than 17 million tourists annually. Roughly of third of those come from the United States, but Canada is in second place with a little more than a million visits per year.
