ST Engineering’s commercial aerospace unit is providing module repair offload support for two of Safran Aircraft Engines’ engine types under a new two-year contract that comes with an option for extension.

Under the agreement, Safran Aircraft Engines will offload module repair work on the high-pressure turbine rotor assembly and the stage 2 nozzle assembly for both engine options to ST Engineering.

The engine options are CFM Leap-1A and Leap-1B engines, which are high-bypass turbofan engines for commercial aircraft. The Leap 1-A is one of two engine options on the Airbus A320 neo family, and the Leap 1B is an exclusive engine option for the Boeing 737 MAX.

ST Engineering on Tuesday (Jul 9) said its collaboration addresses the growing demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for Leap engines, amid operators’ ramp-up of flying operations.

The group believes its offload support augments Safran Aircraft Engines’ MRO capacity, while optimising the turnaround time of engine shop visits for customers.

ST Engineering also intends to reinforce its support to Safran Aircraft Engines by providing Leap-1B engines maintenance offload services. This is on top of other ongoing offload services provided by ST Engineering to Safran Aircraft Engines, such as maintenance work on Safran’s other engine options, such as the CFM 56-5B, CFM 56-7B and Leap-1A.

A subsidiary of French multinational aerospace and defence corporation Safran, Safran Aircraft Engines is a parent company of CFM International, which produces both CFM and Leap engines.

Safran Aircraft Engines’ vice-president for support and services Nicolas Potier said its Leap fleet has undergone the commercial aviation industry’s fastest ramp-up, given its growing fleet of over 3,300 aircraft.

Calling the latest offload agreement a “win-win arrangement”, ST Engineering’s senior vice-president and head of engine services Tay Eng Guan said the group is well positioned to address the rising demand for quick-turn and performance restoration shop visits for Leap engines.

This is given ST Engineering’s investments in equipment such as its shroud grinding machinery, he noted, as well as its “strong team of skilled technicians”.

“We will continue to ramp up our Leap engine capabilities and look forward to providing even greater support to Safran Aircraft Engines and airlines so that they can maximise their operations,” he added.
