The wife of former Calgary Flames player Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed while cycling with his brother Thursday evening, posted on social media Saturday morning. It is the first time she has spoken out publicly since her husband’s sudden death.

Meredith Gaudreau posted twice on Instagram, sharing messages of love and gratitude for her relationship with Gaudreau, and for their children, Noa and Johnny.

“Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite losing you, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours,” she wrote in the first post, published along with photos of the couple throughout their relationship and their family.

“I love you so so much. You were perfect. Some days it felt too good to be true. I love every single thing about you. You are my forever and I can’t wait to be with you again. I love you so much forever and ever.”

The first picture shows the couple and their children celebrating Gaudreau’s birthday, which was on Aug. 31, when he turned 31.

Other photos in the series include snaps of the couple after getting engaged, playing golf, lounging, and posing together on the ice.

Meredith also published another post on Saturday about Gaudreau’s role as a father. It featured images of Gaudreau with his daughter and son doing activities together as well as the children watching him play hockey for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“The absolute best dad in the world. So caring and loving. The best partner to go through parenthood with,” wrote Meredith.

“John never missed a single appointment. Was the best at putting the baby to sleep and the Apple of Noa’s eye. I love how much she looks like him. We are going to make you proud. We love you so so so much daddy.”

Gaudreau’s brother Matthew was also killed Thursday. He leaves behind his pregnant wife, Madeline.

A GoFundMe for Matthew’s family had already reached more than $280,000 — exceeding the $30,000 goal on Saturday

The Gaudreau brothers were in their home state of New Jersey for their sister’s wedding, which was scheduled for Friday, People Magazine reported. The wedding was later cancelled.

The Gaudreau brothers were fatally struck by an alleged drunk driver Thursday night.

Police identified the suspect as Sam Higgins. He is facing charges of two counts of vehicular homicide, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Higgins was ordered to remain in custody until his next hearing on Sept. 5, per the Dispatch.
