Police have ruled that a young woman’s death in the walk-in oven of a Halifax Walmart last month was not suspicious.
The body of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur was discovered Oct. 19 by her mother, who also worked at the same Mumford Road Walmart. Kaur and her mother, originally from India, moved to Canada about three years ago.
“The sudden death that occurred on October 19 in Halifax has been determined not to be suspicious,” Halifax Regional Police said Monday in a news release.

Police responded to the sudden death around 9:30 p.m. They located Kaur’s remains in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.
“There is no evidence of foul play,” according to police.
“Investigators met with family to share this update and extend condolences. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”
The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration lifted a stop-work order Oct. 28 for the Walmart’s bakery area and the commercial oven.
Walmart has since removed the oven, saying it won’t be used again.
Kaur was part of the Sikh community and had been working at the Walmart store for a couple of years.
A crowd-funding appeal organized by the Maritime Sikh Society raised about $190,000 to help the family bring Kaur’s father and brother from India, where they were when she died.
