Sky News described it as an “awkward moment,” before the inauguration. But one user on X pointed out that Trump was being respectful and trying “not to mess up her gorgeous look.”

Others figured it was Melania’s large hat that kept Trump at bay.

Another attempt was more fruitful. Trump appeared to make it past the blockade of his wife’s hat later in the ceremony.

Melania Trump’s Inauguration Day outfit

That wasn’t the only time Melania’s hat was discussed. The internet applauded — and mocked — her sense of style from the moment she appeared. She was dressed in a regal ensemble complete with a tailored coat, a boater-style hat and classic stiletto heels. The outfit was designed by American Adam Lippes, the Washington Post reported, while the hat was by Eric Javits.

“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honour to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump,” Lippes told the Washington Post in a statement. “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.”

However, some online commenters thought her large hat made her look less regal and more like a Mafia wife or the cartoon character Carmen Sandiego.

Trump jokes about Melania

While speaking to a crowd of his supporters in in Emancipation Hall after outgoing U.S. president Joe Biden and former first lady Jill Biden left the event Trump mentioned that Melania told him to remove certain lines from his speech, jokingly adding that she addressed him as “sir” when she was angry. He emphasized that it was just a joke.

He also jokingly added that Melania almost blew away with the wind while they were saying goodbye to the Bidens.

The first lady had held onto her hat as the military helicopter carrying the Bidens generated wind.

“She almost blew away,” Trump said. “She was being elevated off the ground.”

Trump said his speech to his supporters in Emancipation Hall was arranged at the last minute. They were about to leave when Trump was asked to speak to “his other fans that are here.”

He said he worried that Melania wouldn’t be able to endure it.

“I shouldn’t say this, I’m going to get hell when I say this, but her feet are absolutely aching… those heels,” he said.

“(Melania) said, ‘Darling, I love you so much but my feet are killing me,’” said Trump, adding that it would be about a 500-yard walk to get to the group of supporters.

“I said, ‘Can you make it?’ and she said, ‘We’re going to make it no matter what,’” said Trump.

Trump praises Melania

Trump heaped praise on his wife in his unscripted speech.

“I have a first lady who has been incredible,” he said. “We all appreciate it because you’ve been a great first lady, a beautiful and a great first lady.”
