Sean Dyche has taken a dig at Vincent Kompany, questioning why Bayern Munich hired the Belgian after he got relegated with Burnley last season. Kompany had succeeded Dyche as Burnley boss and won the Championship in 2023.

Dyche was sacked by Burnley after nine-and-a-half years in charge in 2022, but the club were unable to avoid relegation from the Premier League under caretaker boss Mike Jackson.

Kompany was appointed as Dyche’s permanent successor the following season and he set a Championship record as Burnley sealed promotion with seven games to spare. However, they struggled in the top flight and were relegated after picking up just five wins all season.

Despite that, Kompany was appointed Bayern Munich boss last summer and Dyche has brutally quipped that he wishes he could have “left the club £127million in debt and then got the Bayern job”.

Dyche is now hosting a radio show on talkSPORT after he was sacked by Everton in January and while discussing his time at Burnley, the 53-year-old could not resist taking a swipe at Kompany.

“So what the club were brilliant at, they dealt with that promotion [up to the Premier League in 2014] in the right way,” Dyche said.

“And the reason was, and I was involved in this, but I said to them they were still paying players off from two years, three years previous when they got in the Premier League.

“And I went, ‘You can’t go through that again’. I said, ‘There’s got to be more to it. Now you’ve got to do something that means something’. So they agreed, built the training ground, took a knock, went down that first season.

“I spent about nine million quid on the team, which is farcical, really. But put the money into the club and the future of the club. And they did stand by me. So we did go down that season on 35 points.

“People forget that. We’ve gone to big Komps [Kompany], haven’t we? 24 [points], I think they got. It’s been £127million and he got the Bayern job.

“Come on, I don’t know how that works. I wish I was doing it. I wish I’d have left the club £127million in debt and then got the Bayern job. Anyways, there’s an interesting twist of life.”

After failing to win a trophy last season for the first time since 2012, Kompany has Bayern six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and preparing for a Champions League quarter-final clash against Inter Milan.
