Thomas Tuchel has got off to a perfect start as England boss, but admitted parts of the Three Lions’ performance against Latvia made ‘no sense’. The German coach saw his side prevail in a 3-0 win having earned a 2-0 victory over Albania in his first outing as boss.

England ran out comfortable winners in their second match of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup thanks to goals from Reece James, Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze. Tuchel’s side dominated proceedings at Wembley but were perhaps unable to satisfy their boss’ desire for excitement.

The Three Lions looked to utilise Marcus Rashford down the left flank frequenlty but were often stifled in the centre of the pitch. Latvia initially proved a difficult opposition to break down.

Tuchel’s main frustrations came from his side’s approach in the early stages of the second half however. The former Bayern Munich and Chelsea coach was unhappy to see his team slow their play down and limit their movement off the ball.

“It was not an easy match,” Tuchel admitted following the game. “We saw a lot of good things, created good chances.

“We needed a free-kick to unlock it. I’m happy with the attitude, energy and desire. We will get there.

“I know Reecey [James] and the quality the boy has is amazing. He has every right to be proud and happy with his performance. He is in excellent shape. He looks sharp, in shape and the quality there can be no doubt.

“The second half we started to slow the game down and made little movement, which makes no sense. But the second goal was better as we showed acceleration from one of our sixes.

“We encourage everyone to have these late accelerations but we struggled a bit until the goal.”

England captain Kane was nevertheless pleased with the progress the team showed following on from their first win. The Bayern striker also had some kind words for the Three Lions boss following his first week in charge.

“I think there were more patterns of play, more chances than Friday,” said Kane, “But again it was tough, playing against 11 behind the ball.

“Overall we can be pleased with two wins and two clean sheets. We had to be patient.

“Thomas Tuchel is fantastic, he has settled in straight away. He is a pleasure to work for, he has brought the passion.”
