Ruben Amorim will look to freshen up his Manchester United squad in the summer but some questions remain when it comes to the future of some out-of-favour stars

Manchester United know they have work to do in the summer, though the way they end the current season may impact their options in the transfer market. Success in the Europa League would see Ruben Amorim’s side secure Champions League qualification, but anything less and they’re unlikely to secure European qualification by other means.

Lyon are United’s next opponents in the continental competition after a 5-2 aggregate victory over Real Sociedad. If Amorim’s men can get past the Ligue 1 side then they will face Rangers or Athletic Club in the semi-finals.

Amorim wasn’t able to make too many new additions in January, though Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven have both made an early impact at Old Trafford. Whether or not United end the season with silverware, they will feel a reshuffle of the playing staff is needed.

Some out-of-favour players might be easier to offload than others. Antony’s form at Real Betis could lead to a permanent move, but questions remain over Jadon Sancho after a drop-off in his Chelsea form.

In addition to the exits, we’ve got the latest on some potential additions for United. Here are Mirror Football‘s latest lines from around Old Trafford.

Chelsea’s Sancho stance

Chelsea are ready to push ahead with their plan to sign Jadon Sancho at the end of the season. The Blues have an option to pay to get out of their £25million obligation to buy, but will not be exercising that option.

It won’t end there either, according to Sky Sports. After securing a permanent deal for Sancho – with that obligation kicking in provided they finish 14th or higher – they will add another winger to their ranks.

The Blues are well-stocked out wide, but have been without banned winger Mykhailo Mudryk since before the turn of the year. They also allowed Joao Felix to leave on loan in January, and it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese leaves permanently come the summer.

United after Trincao

Ruben Amorim is ready to raid former club Sporting CP in the summer, with Francisco Trincao high on his list. Arsenal and Newcastle are also keen on the winger, who previously spent a season in English football with Wolves.

Amorim brought Trincao to Sporting in 2022, initially on loan, after the Portugal international struggled to establish himself in Barcelona’s first team. He has nine goals and 15 assists in all competitions this term, including eight league goals as Sporting sit top of the pile.

The 25-year-old returned to the Portugal international setup in September after a three-year absence. He scored his first goals for the Selecao on Sunday, netting twice in an extra-time victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

Up to 10 could leave

Ruben Amorim’s summer clearout could see as many as 10 players leave Manchester United. Some of those exits are all but sealed already, with Christian Eriksen indicating he will be playing his football elsewhere next term.

The MEN names Eriksen as one of four out-of-contract stars expected to leave for nothing. Victor Lindelof is also due to depart, while veterans Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton are both tipped to retire in the summer.

Out-on-loan quartet Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford could all make permanent exits, though Sancho is the only one for whom a fee has already been agreed. Others at risk of leaving include Casemiro and Altay Bayindir.
