Liverpool manager Arne Slot may well find himself needing to bring in reinforcements in attack over the summer depending what happens to Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez
Arne Slot has been urged to reunite with striker Igor Paixao at Anfield. Brazilian forward Paixao, 24, helped Slot’s team win the Eredivisie in 2023 and has 11 goals in all competitions this season.
Liverpool manager Slot is within touching distance of the Premier League title, thanks in no small part to the goals of Mohamed Salah. The rest of the frontline has been less prolific, though, with Salah the only player to hit double-figures for league goals this term.
If the Egyptian leaves in the summer when his contract expires, Slot will need to make at least one addition. He might even need to make two, with questions remaining over the future of Darwin Nunez.
Dutch international Cody Gakpo could have a bigger part to play next term, having hit 16 goals this season before running into recent injury issues. However, another ex-Feyenoord boss, Rob Jacobs, believes Slot can find an upgrade on Gakpo in the form of Paixao.
“I really think he will make Liverpool stronger,” Jacobs told 1908.nl when speaking about the South American, who Slot brought to De Kuip in 2022. “Arne Slot must also enjoy his development.

“Gakpo is of course also a fantastic player and is doing well at Liverpool, but I think Paixao is better. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool were to report to Feyenoord. €40 or 50 million [£33m-42m]? They don’t make a fuss about that in England.”
“He is getting better every day. Incredibly goal-oriented, he is the most dangerous man at Feyenoord. Really nothing but praise, he scores magnificent goals.”
Gakpo, 25, last scored for Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham on February 6. He came on as a substitute in the final against Newcastle but was unable to help Slot’s team overturn a two-goal deficit.
While his scoreless run at club level is approaching two months – albeit with only one start and four substitute appearances in that time – he was back among the goals during the international break. He scored for the Netherlands as they drew 2-2 with Spain in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final, but La Roja ended up winning on penalties after another draw at the Mestalla on Sunday.
Gakpo and Liverpool remain firm favourites for the Premier League title, but Feyenoord have found things tougher in the Eredivisie. Robin van Persie has taken over as manager in an effort to lead the team back into the Champions League places, but they’re currently two points adrift of third-placed Utrecht.
