Emma Raducanu suggested that the humidity may have been to blame for her requiring medical treatment during the second set of her 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 defeat to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open after she felt ‘dizzy’.

The British No.2 has enjoyed a fine run in Miami, playing some of her best tennis since winning the US Open as a teenager back in 2021. She was bested by Pegula, though, in a competitive match against the current world No.4.

There were concerns for Raducanu late in the second set when she had to her vitals checked after feeling unwell. The 22-year-old had her blood pressure taken and was given ice towels to cool down on court by a doctor before showing tremendous heart to force a deciding set by claiming victory in a tie-break.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Raducanu, who came up short in the decisive set. But the most important thing was she was able to continue and seemed to be okay leaving the court after the match.

Speaking afterwards, Raducanu was asked about her on court treatment, where she revealed the humidity left her feeling faint. She said: “I just felt really dizzy. I felt faint. I don’t know, it was very humid out there and we have a long wait, so maybe just an accumulation, and just physical points as well and there were long rallies and heavy conditions, but….yeah I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set, but in the third I definitely struggled a little bit.”

Pegula will go on to face 19-year-old wild card Alexandra Eala for a place in the final after the teenager shocked world No.2 Iga Swiatek 6-2 7-5 in their quarter-final to book a spot in the last four.

The American paid a classy tribute to Raducanu’s performance post-match, saying: “It was tough. I played a good first set, a little let down in the second, got it back, went up 2-0 in the tiebreak, but it kind of flipped.

“She started moving the ball really well, serving good… sometimes it just happens, but I just wanted to come out in the third really strong, really quick, and just kind of jump on her and not keep the third set too close.”
