Premier League owners and chief executives have decided against shutting the transfer window early – go against their sporting directors in the process. The decision was made at a shareholders’ meeting with leading figures refusing to even vote on the matter.

It had been suggested that this summer’s transfer window should close on August 14 – two days before the start of the season. The original motive, following a meeting of the various sporting directors, was to ensure managers knew the scope of their squads in advance.

The original talk centred around how numerous deals drag on unnecessarily because of the extra two weeks until the start of September – and thus an earlier deadline would see negotiations wrapped up sooner.

However club owners and chief executives believe that Premier League would be at a disadvantage when compared other European leagues, as well as the Saudi Pro League, which stay open later, reports the Telegraph.

The summer window previously closed early in 2018 and 2019 but it was later changed back to the original close at the start of September for the reasons stated by the owners and the chairman. Numerous managers during those windows bemoaned that their players were being pursued whilst they could not sign replacements.

Sporting directors had also proposed cutting the January window to just two weeks rather than lasting for a month. However preliminary discussions suggested that it would not get close to the simple majority of 11 that it would require to change the dates.

Premier League clubs have voted in favour of breaking the summer transfer window into two sections this summer in a major change. The transfer window will now open on June 1 to June 10 due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup. It will then reopen on June 16 and close on September 1 in line with other European leagues. The earlier window will allow Chelsea and Manchester City to register new players in time for the Club World Cup, which gets underway in the United States on June 14.

The newly expanded tournament runs from June 14 to the final on July 23. Those dates have led to some issues with several players currently being out of contract from June 30. City star Kevin De Bruyne and Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric are among them. Those players will have to come to a short-term arrangements with their clubs if they are to play in the latter stages.

A brief statement said: “Premier League clubs have today agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window. The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup. It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
