Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes led fans in an X-rated chant about team-mate Sandro Tonali as they celebrated the club’s historic Carabao Cup victory.

Newcastle held an open-top bus parade in front of a huge number of supporters who packed the streets of Tyneside. Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were on target as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 to win their first major domestic trophy in 70 years and the city came together to celebrate the triumph on Saturday.

The parade took Newcastle’s stars from St James’ Park, through the city centre and culminated at the Town Moor where a stage had been put together. Toon fans Ant and Dec hosted the festivities and Guimaraes burst into song when handed the microphone.

The Brazil international led supporters in a rendition of a chant about Tonali which included a dig at local rivals Sunderland. “Sandro Tonali, Sandro Tonali! He eats spaghetti, he loves Moretti, he hates f****** Sunderland.”

Guimaraes was also asked about the speech he gave the players before the final and replied: “Well, I said to them ‘today, we go to the pitch as players and leave there as f***ing legends!'”

The 27-year-old also insisted that Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win is “just the first step” as they hope to turn lifting trophies into a habit. “Unbelievable, feeling good, very, very good, I think everyone here deserves it,” Guimaraes added.

“70 years a lot for our fans, hopeful, this is just the beginning, we want more, and we’re going to work for it. We did it for [the fans], we spent a lot of time together, so they deserve a lot more than anything, we played for them as well.

“The way I see it, kids, old guys, they’re crying, you know, I think we made history. Now I have time to think about it and, yeah, history is made, but we want more. Since my first interview in the club, I said I want to put my name in the club’s history and that’s it.

“I did this but it’s just the first step. When you taste once, you just want more. For now, we just celebrate today and tomorrow I will have to start to think about our game in the Premier League.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe echoed Guimaraes’ comments, stating: “We are hungry for more, but without getting ahead of ourselves in a sense that we now have 10 huge Premier League games to go back to and try to focus on that.

“The taste of success leaves you definitely hungry for more days like this. It’s unbelievable. I didn’t know what to expect today but this is incredible. I hoped people would show up but this is unbelievable.”

Fan group Wor Flags also unveiled a massive banner depicting Howe celebrating the win, with the flag dropped from the Sandman Hotel near St James’ Park. When asked about the banner, Howe said: “It was very emotional. I can’t thank the people of Newcastle enough.”
