Ange Postecoglou appeared to have a run-in with the Tottenham supporters at Stamford Bridge during his team’s 1-0 defeat in the Premier League on Thursday night

Ange Postecoglou has lost the Tottenham supporters after a fourth straight derby defeat against Chelsea, according to Jamie Redknapp. Spurs were on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, handing them a 16th loss in 30 Premier League matches.

The away fans chanted “you don’t know what you’re doing” after Postecoglou replaced Lucas Bergvall with Pape Sarr in the second half. The Tottenham boss then appeared to cup his ear towards the supporters after Sarr equalised moments later, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for a foul.

Enzo Fernandez’s header was enough to win it for Chelsea, who were much the better side and moved back into the top four and 18 points ahead of 14-placed Tottenham with the win.

After the final whistle, Spurs’ players went over to the away fans, who voiced their displeasure, but Postecoglou did not venture over.

Watching the images in the studio, former Tottenham midfielder Redknapp gave his analysis of the situation as pressure piled on top of the Australian. “I think he made a couple of substitutions. I don’t think it went down well with the Spurs fans,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

“He’s the manager he’s got to make these decisions. When they scored, I think he cupped his ears as if to say ‘I know better’.

“Normally, he’d be over there clapping them. There’s a disconnect between the two at the moment, it’s not ideal for the manager. He’s got some big games ahead. He’s got to keep his head up and keep going, keep working hard and believe in what he’s trying to do.

“It was a tough night for them, they never really played, never really got going, but these are the pressures of being a Premier League manager.”

Postecoglou claimed not to have heard the chants when asked about the incidents by Sky Sports. “No mate, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he responded in a tense confrontation with reporter Patrick Davison.

“I looked at them because I just wanted them to be happy, mate. We’ve just scored a cracking goal, so I wanted them to cheer because they haven’t had a lot to cheer.

“It’s not the first time my substitutions have been booed, if you’ve followed my tenure, it’s not the first time. They’re allowed to boo, but I wanted them to cheer, because I thought it was a cracking goal.”

Sarr powered a shot through the save of Robert Sanchez shortly after coming onto the pitch to make it 1-1. But the goal was chalked off after VAR Jarred Gillett sent referee Craig Pawson to the monitor to review the Spurs’ midfielder on Moises Caicedo in the build-up.
