Steven Gerrard has been warned that he would not be able to trust his players if he took over as Rangers boss. Gerrard is out of work after leaving Al-Ettifaq in January after a difficult spell in the Saudi Pro League.

The Liverpool legend’s most successful stint in management came at Ibrox, where he won the 2021 Scottish Premiership title as Invincibles. Rangers are looking for a new boss with Phillipe Clement being sacked earlier this year and interim Barry Ferguson struggling for results.

Ferguson saw his side crash to a 2-0 defeat to Hibernian on Saturday, making it a record-setting five successive home defeats. Rangers also conceded twice for the sixth domestic game in a row for the first time in 131 years.

Dylan Levitt and Martin Boyle scored in each half to seal the three points for the visitors. The defeat was another blow to Ferguson’s hopes of taking on the manager’s role on a permanent basis.

Gerrard would appear to be a leading contender for the job, with Rangers also set to undergo a takeover by 49ers Enterprises over the summer. Club legend Kris Boyd though has warned that the current squad is in desperate need of a clear-out.

He told Sky Sports : “They’ve tried to get a bit of consistency but the players keep making the same mistake time after time, picking and choosing what games you perform in. Any manager looking at that will think I need to clear this place out because the same mistakes keep happening time after time.

“I’m not saying Rangers don’t have good players, they’ve shown their capable of putting in big performances. But it might just be that the shirt is too heavy to keep doing it week in week out.

“It might just be that the whole place needs gutted top to bottom. There’s only so many managers coaches players can throw under the bus and it looks like it’s happening again.”

Ferguson is still without a home win since succeeding Clement. His side are now 13 points behind leaders Celtic, having played a game more, with the interim boss left furious with their performance.

He fumed to BBC Scotland : “Angry, really angry in fact – that’s the most simple way I can put it. There’s no way I’m accepting that. I thought we started on the front foot before Hibs got the first goal. Another mistake from us.

“I said at half-time I need to see more, I want to see more aggression in our play and I never saw it. That’s the thing I’m raging with. I’m not going to kid anybody on. Hibs deserved it. They tackled harder, ran harder and wanted it more.

“It’s sore for me to say that. I’ll take the responsibility. I pick the team and I need to go away with the players and have a long hard look in the mirror. This [season] is in real danger of just petering out.

“It’s about pride. I know we’re in the Europa League, but those are easy games to get up for. I will make changes, I’m not scared to make changes. I need a team that’s willing to put their bodies on the line.”
