Liverpool are on the cusp of lifting the Premier League ahead of Arsenal, which would see Arne Slot emulate Jurgen Klopp in winning the top-flight title

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister revealed the old guard at Anfield are desperate for an open top bus parade to celebrate winning the Premier League – something Jurgen Klopp was never able to do. Arne Slot’s side are on the cusp of winning the title, despite stumbling to a 3-2 away defeat to Fulham before Sunday’s clash against West Ham.

The Reds need 11 points from their final seven matches to lift the title, but could win it even earlier if Arsenal drop more points. Slot has been eager to remind his team that the job is not yet done and will ensure they do not drop their intensity.

But with memories of the 2020 Premier League title triumph, which forced Liverpool to lift the title in an empty stadium as a result of Coronavirus restrictions, still fresh, players who were under Klopp’s guidance have not forgotten that campaign. The German manager was adamant the club would hold an open top bus parade when restrictions passed.

By the time life had returned to normal, the following season had ended and the title was back with Manchester City. The lack of celebrations in Liverpool is still on the mind of Liverpool players.

Mac Allister, in an interview with Telemundo Deportes, said: “We have talked about it with players who have been in the team for longer and lived that. That would be a big difference compared to that year.

“They all say that they couldn’t enjoy it as they would have liked due to the pandemic. Hopefully, we can win it this year and celebrate it with our people.

“That’s the main thing. When Argentina won the World Cup, the best part was going back home with the trophy to celebrate with the fans.

“We hope to do the same with Liverpool fans. But we are still far from that. There are many difficult games ahead, so we need to keep working.”

In 2020, while addressing supporters soon after the title was confirmed, Klopp said: “Thank you very much, we should all together celebrate at home, drink and celebrate. When this bull**** virus is gone we will celebrate together and have a party!”

While Slot is now in charge at Anfield, Klopp did recently hint he would attend any open top bus parade, should the current Liverpool crop get over the line. When asked if he would return to Liverpool for any title celebrations, Klopp said: “Yes.

“The plan is (to be in Liverpool) but not on the bus. That’s the idea to be honest, but we will see. I think I will be there for the last game. I didn’t want to go earlier to be honest because I didn’t want to jinx it. So I go there when it’s decided.”

Liverpool host West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday before travelling to Leicester City on April 20. After that the Reds will face a difficult run-in which will see them face Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion, before climaxing the campaign with a clash against Crystal Palace.
