Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been tipped for a sensational return by club legend Teddy Sheringham, who believes the Norwegian was harshly sacked. Ex-United striker Solskjaer was axed in 2021 following a run of one win in seven games.

But the club have been unable to turn the corner since – despite winning two trophies under his permanent successor Erik ten Hag and Sheringham feels their current predicament under Ruben Amorim shows things weren’t that bad under Solskjaer.

United were seventh in the league when Solskjaer was let go and the Red Devils are now 14th in the table after struggling to adapt to the methods of Amorim – who Sheringham has not proved he is the right man for the job.

Solskjaer is now coaching Besiktas and has done a superb job so far, overseeing eight wins and one draw in his first 12 games and Sheringham feels his former United team-mate could eventually return to the club for a second spell if the team’s woes continue under Amorim.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thought he was harshly treated when he got the sack and now Manchester United are still looking at the solution to get back to winning ways,” he told Casino Hawks.

“He thought he was bringing that back but the hierarchy didn’t think so. Looking at where they are now, the situation that Ole and his team are in doesn’t look so bad.

“Looking forward, I’m sure he’ll be champing at the bit if he keeps doing well to maybe come back to the club for a second spell as manager.”

Sheringham was critical of Amorim despite guiding United to a Europa League semi-final with a dramatic 5-4 win over Lyon, saying he hasn’t done enough so far to show he is the right man for the job.

Sheringham criticised Ruben Amorim and insisted “things aren’t looking great” under the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss

He insisted “things are not looking great” after watching regular mistakes creep in and he also questioned why he persisted with playing out from the back.

“Has Ruben Amorim done enough to prove he is the right man for the job? Well, not really,” he added. “You’re looking for signs to say, yeah, things are looking up, but it’s really not.”

“Things are not looking great. It’s the same mistakes and the same people making mistakes, the goalkeepers constantly as fault.

“I know it sounds dinosaurish, but why is there all this playing out from the back? In areas where you are only going to increase pressure on yourself, that’s what I cannot understand.”
