Kevin De Bruyne is a man looking for a new club

Roy Keane has joked that Kevin De Bruyne should consider joining Manchester United – because he wouldn’t need to move house. The Manchester City playmaker will leave the club this summer when his contract expires.

The Premier League side have decided to let the Belgian seek pastures new after a decade of success together. It leaves the two-time PFA Player of the Year seeking a new employer with clubs in England, the MLS and Saudi Arabia all touted as targets.

De Bruyne has proved to be among the best foreign imports in the history of England’s top flight and, despite a dip this season, has continued to produce for City en route to numerous pieces of silverware.

Shay Given claimed that Pep Guardiola and those at the Etihad will be concerned that a Premier League rival could swoop in and sign the Belgian before Keane joked that, for convenience, a move to Old Trafford should be on his mind.

The ex-goalkeeper said on Sky Sports: “Kevin will admit he is not at his peak but you can see he still has a lot to offer. He can turn up at another Premier League club and that is a concern for City.” Keane interrupted and suggested: “United? He wouldn’t have to move house.”

De Bruyne has spent a bulk of this season out injured but has scored more than 100 times for City, whilst also being named the club’s Player of the Season on four years. He confessed recently that it was the club’s decision not to table a new offer – which was something of a surprise.

“I have not had any offer the whole year, they just took a decision,” said De Bruyne. “Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I just have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing, but I understand clubs have to make decisions.”

He has backed himself to continue competing and prolonging his career in Europe would allow him to play at the highest level rather than enjoying the twilight years of his career in the United States or the Middle East.

“I feel like I still have a lot to give,” De Bruyne said. “Obviously I know I’m not 25 any more but I still feel like I can do my job. I’m open for anything. I have to look at the whole picture. I’m looking at sporting, family, everything together, what makes the most sense for me and my family.

“I like to play football. I like to compete. That’s what I feel, so I can’t say that I want to quit because I still feel that whenever I’m in training I want to beat the guys.”
