Liverpool were not crowned Premier League champions on Wednesday night as Arsenal avoided defeat against Crystal Palace but Arne Slot’s men may not have to wait much longer

Close but no cigar, then, for Arne Slot and Co. Liverpool would have been crowned Premier League champions had Crystal Palace beaten Arsenal on Wednesday, but the Gunners’ 2-2 draw means Liverpool will have to keep the champagne on ice – for now.

Arsenal’s draw means the gap between the two sides now stands at 12 points with four games remaining. The Reds have played one game less and could still wrap up the title by the end of the weekend if its a case of business as usual at Anfield.

Just one more point would get Slot’s men over the line, meaning victory in Sunday’s big game against Tottenham would land them a 20th domestic title.

Arsenal’s date in the Champions League semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain means they do not have another domestic fixture this month. That means they could be forced to give the Reds a guard of honour when they travel to Merseyside in May.

The omens are good for Liverpool: when they and Spurs met in the reverse fixture earlier this season, Slot’s men put six past their rivals on the way to a memorable victory.

A repeat on Sunday wouldn’t go amiss.

Even if Liverpool don’t get over the line this weekend, it would take an almighty collapse from the Reds to hand Arsenal their first domestic title in over 20 years given games are running out.

They would still have another four attempts to get over the line should they fail to beat Tottenham at the weekend. As well as games against Spurs and Arsenal, Liverpool will also play Chelsea, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Arsenal, meanwhile, could yet have a fight on their hands to finish second. But while they might have half an eye on their Champions League semi-final, Arteta insists they’re still taking their league responsibilities very seriously. “All we can do is delay that moment and from our side earn the right to finish as high as possible,” he said after Sunday’s win away at Ipswich Town.
