Rory McIlroy has revealed why his mum and dad did not attend his landmark Masters success – because they were too busy moving house. The Northern Irishman ended his long wait for the title in Augusta earlier this month.

And there were memorable celebrations over in the USA after he had donned the iconic green jacket. But there were some notable names missing from McIlroy’s celebrations – including his parents.

Speaking at his ceremony, he said: “I want to say hello to my mum and dad. They’re back home in Northern Ireland. They did [make a lot of sacrifices for me], and I can’t wait to see them next week. I just can’t wait to celebrate this with them.”

And he has finally confirmed why both of his mum and dad decided to stay back home – because they were packing up boxes ready to move home. Speaking to Michael Breed’s SiriusXM show, McIlroy said: “They said it was a good thing. They were glad they had something to do to take their mind off what was happening at The Masters.

“It was the first time ever that he (father) watched me play golf on TV and had to pour himself a drink so he was going through the emotions as much as everybody else!”

And while McIlroy’s parents were absent when he received the green jacket, he has confirmed that they all made up for it once he returned to Holywood. He added: “It was amazing to relive the week — and not just relive the week but the entire journey we’ve been on to get to this point.

“Being an only child, I obviously have an extremely close bond with my parents, and to be able to share this with them was incredibly special.”

While McIlroy was able to celebrate with his parents, there was more on the agenda for the recently-crowned Masters champion before heading home. Speaking recently, he said: “It’s been an amazing few days after and to be able to reflect on it and everything that happened and the magnitude of everything.

“The big thing for me is how the whole journey is how it resonated with people. It’s not every day you get to fulfil one of your lifelong goals and dreams.

“We first went to London with Erica and Poppy to see our new home that we’re building and we made the trip over to Belfast to see a few other people that are important to us. Just to be with them, to be with Erica and Poppy and my mum and dad.

“To see Michael Bannon my lifelong coach and spend a bit more time with Harry (Diamond) and his wife. Celebrate with the people that have been part of this whole thing for my entire career was absolutely amazing. As you can hear, I picked up a bit of a cold on the way, so I’m feeling a little bit under the weather. Obviously, it’s been an amazing few days.”
