Pep Guardiola has claimed he will take a break from coaching when his time at Manchester City ends, with Jamie Carragher saying it is deserved because of his intense nature

Jamie Carragher says Pep Guardiola will “deserve” a break when he finally decides to step away from Manchester City because the head coach brings an unmatched level of intensity to the job.

And Liverpool legend Carragher says that is proven by how many players have left the club because they found working with him too “tough.”

Guardiola, who signed a contract extension to the summer of 2027 earlier this season, claimed before Friday night’s Premier League win against Wolves that he would take a break from management when he calls time on his trophy-laden spell at City.

And Carragher told Sky Sports News: “I think they’ll have to reset in terms of what they’ll do in the market in the summer and there was a lot of talk of Pep maybe leaving this season, but he signed a contract this season.

“Everybody who works with him tells you how intense he is, so uncertain players can’t put up with that for so long. That’s why it feels at times there is a lot of change at Manchester City in terms of personnel.

“If someone’s not happy, they get moved on quite quickly because even though Pep is the most successful coach we’ve probably ever seen and probably ever will see, it is tough working with him.

“So you can imagine what it’s like when he’s taken his work home with him, and he’s been here a long time as well. He’s been very successful and he deserves a break of a year if he needs it – if he feels he needs one, he needs one.”

The 1-0 win against in-form Wolves, thanks to a first-half goal from the soon to depart Kevin De Bruyne, has strengthened City’s grip on a Champions League place.

They now lead sixth-placed Nottingham Forest by four points with three games to play, though Nuno Espirito Santo’s side must still play this weekend, away to Crystal Palace, on Monday night.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, aimed another dig at City’s hierarchy for not giving him a new contract. The captain is aiming to join another Premier League club this summer and following his penultimate home appearance for the club he has won every major trophy with, he said: “I showed I can still play here (in the Premier League) otherwise I don’t do what I have done in these last four or five weeks.

“Obviously I know I’ve got one game left here (at the Etihad) but I just try to do my job like I’ve always done and I did that today, so I am proud of what I am doing. I give everything and I want to win the game.”
