Manchester United have endured a woeful Premier League season under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim and former boss Ralf Rangnick has pulled no punches with his assessment

Ralf Rangnick has claimed Manchester United are now “significantly worse” despite spending MILLIONS since his spell at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have struggled in the Premier League this term as they sit 14th with just four matches of the season left to play.

And while Man United’s Premier League woes aren’t exactly new – they have not qualified for the Champions League since 2021 – former boss Rangnick has claimed that things have got even worse since his interim spell at the club at the back-end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking to Canal+ Austria, he said: “In the end. That a few basic things need to be changed and since then 700 or if not £750m has been spent on new players. And in the table they are even significantly worse than back then.

“They could actually, with a win in the Europa League, still save this season. Because then they will be in the Champions League. Everything else would be a disappointment, and it will be interesting to see what will happen.”

And while Rangnick has slammed the club’s transfer acumen over the past few years, he has also taken aim at the decision to appoint Ruben Amorim – a coach that he believes is not suited to the players at his disposal. He added: “They have signed a coach in the middle of the season who plays with a three or a five-back, and the squad was built based on a four-back system.

“This is what you see when you see them play, especially in Premier League games against the opponents against which Manchester United normally has to win.

“Sure, in the Europa League, they have – usually with the result against Lyon, you are eliminated – they have turned it around. And of course, the stadium had a huge effect.”

Rangnick has never been afraid to share his true opinion of the Red Devils. Even during his time at the club, he admitted that the club needed ‘open heart surgery’ to get them back in on track.

In the end, Rangnick led United to sixth place in his spell with the club and he was eventually replaced by Erik ten Hag. And despite the Dutchman winning the FA Cup and League Cup, he was sacked midway through the current campaign after a woeful start to the season.

Things have not improved under Amorim from a league point of view but they could still return to the Champions League with silverware should they win the Europa League.
