West Brom are eyeing up Tottenham assistant Ryan Mason as their next manager – but the former player doesn’t want to make any decision until their Europa League efforts end
West Brom are considering a move for Ryan Mason as they eye their next manager – but their biggest issue is the Tottenham assistant’s timeline which has him solely focused on the club’s Europa League push.
Mason, who is only 33, is part of Ange Postecoglou’s staff and has helped get the club to within 90 minutes of a European final. The player turned coach has no desire to entertain anything but Tottenham’s trophy push, which leaves the Baggies waiting in the lurch.
The delay over Mason leaves the door open for other candidates, reports The Sun, with the Baggies looking for Tony Mowbray’s successor. An all-English final against Manchester United in Bilbao is likely to take place on May 21.
Mason has ambitions to be a manager one day, but wants to do the right thing when it comes to Tottenham and announcing his exit would not be ideal preparation for a final. He’s had had two stints as interim Spurs boss – one in 2021 and the other in 2023.
Throughout his time in north London Mason has worked as an assistant manager, technical coach and head of academy coaching but getting the West Brom job would be his biggest step yet and a chance to improve himself having missed out on the Anderlecht job previously.

Postecoglou previously said on his assistant: “Ryan is obviously someone who sees himself as one day taking that opportunity. It’s a really important decision for the guys. It’s not like we want them to leave and certainly with Ryan, he is doing a great job for us here.”
Tony Mowbray was sacked by the Baggies last month after getting only five wins in 18 league games, which ended their play-off hopes as they eventually finished ninth. The Midlands were four points off the top six despite boasting one of the best goal differences in the second tier.
West Brom have gone between the Premier League and the Championship for the best part of two decades. They last played in the top flight in 2021, but went down after just one season. They made the play-offs last season but were beaten by Southampton in the semi-finals.
Steve Cooper is among the other names being linked with the Hawthorns job. Cooper has an impressive record in the second tier, guiding Swansea into the play-offs and landing promotion whilst in charge at Nottingham Forest. He remains without a job since leaving Leicester.
