Manchester United have endured their worst season in recent memory and Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co plan to review Ruben Amorim’s position ahead of the summer break

Manchester United will review Ruben Amorim’s position this summer – even if he wins the Europa League. The move will come after under-fire Amorim piled extra pressure on himself by admitting he may not be the right man for the job.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and the rest of the club’s hierarchy will assess Amorim’s position at the end of the season. Even if United beat Tottenham in next week’s Europa League final to reach the Champions League, Amorim’s position will be evaluated, after such a shambolic league campaign and in the wake of his extraordinary post-match comments.

After Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham, United’s 17th in the Premier League this season, Amorim suggested he may have to go if their form does not improve.

Amorim also questioned whether it was worth United beating Spurs in the Europa League final, suggesting they would be better off without Champions League football next season.

Those remarks have put Amorim on a collision course with the United hierarchy, who need the team to win the final because of the £100million the club will earn by reaching the Champions League.

Amorim and United co-owner Ratcliffe have a good working relationship, but that alliance could be damaged by the manager’s forthright comments in the wake of the latest defeat.

With United struggling financially, against the constraints of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), United cannot afford not to be in Europe next season.

But Amorim and his staff have questioned whether it would be better to have a season without European games, to allow them to focus on rebuilding the team on the domestic front.

Amorim has won just six of his 25 Premier League games since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, with this season United’s worst since they were relegated in 1974.

The 40-year-old Amorim joined United from Sporting Lisbon on a contract until June 2027, with the option of an extra year.
