Norwich City are considering a number of candidates in their search for a new head coach after deciding that Jack Wilshere would not be getting the job permanently

Pep Lijnders is poised for talks over the Norwich City vacancy after the Canaries decided against handing the job to Jack Wilshere on a full-time basis.

Norwich made the decision to part company with their former head coach, Johannes Hoff Thorup, after a 3-1 defeat away at Millwall last month before handing the reins to Wilshere on an interim basis. The former Arsenal and England star oversaw the club’s final two league games of the season but it emerged last week that he would not get the job permanently.

Ben Knapper, the Canaries’ sporting director, is leading the search for the Thorup’s permanent successor – Lijnders is in contention for a surprise return to English football in the Championship.

As revealed by The Telegraph, Jurgen Klopp‘s former right-hand man is one of the names being considered by the Norwich hierarchy as they mull over their options. The Dutchman, 42, is set to be interviewed by the Norfolk outfit later this week.

Gary O’Neill, the former Wolves head coach, has already discussed the Carrow Road vacancy with Norwich and is unattached after leaving the Molineux outfit back in December despite links to other clubs.

Steve Cooper has also been sounded out but it is outlined he is unlikely to take on the role.

Lijnders departed Anfield at the end of the 2023/24 campaign alongside Klopp. He landed the No.1 job at RB Salzburg in Austria but was sacked in December after just 29 games at the helm.

While talks with Lijnders are pencilled in for the coming days it appears that Norwich are in no rush to seal an appointment with the report adding that a decision is not expected until the end of the month.

“We want somebody in as soon as we can without compromising the quality of our process and of the candidate, and finding the right person,” Knapper said of the Canaries’ search for a new boss recently.

“It’s not something we expect to wrap up in a week or two but we don’t want this to drag. We absolutely will have a head coach in place long before pre-season starts.”
