Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has pulled no punches with his assessment of the club’s incredibly poor Premier League campaign ahead of Friday’s game with Chelsea

Harry Maguire insists that he and the rest of the Manchester United squad must take the blame for their current plight during a brutally honest interview in the wake of the club’s ‘unacceptable’ Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils have fallen well below expectations this season and are currently languishing in 16th place ahead of their meeting with Chelsea on Friday night, although Ruben Amorim and Co could still land a trophy after reaching next week’s Europa League final.

Victory in Bilbao against Tottenham next week would see United clinch an unlikely golden ticket to next season’s Champions League and a trophy.

But Maguire has pulled no punches over how poor their campaign has been, admitting the team have been “nowhere near good enough”. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It’s been really tough in the Premier League; we can’t hide away from that. It’s been nowhere good enough for this club. To look at the table, it’s embarrassing, especially for us players.

“Us players, we have got to take responsibility, because we’ve had two managers and loads of opportunities to win football matches and we just haven’t done it well enough this season.”

United’s exploits in Europe are a direct contrast to their struggles in the league. Amorim made six changes to the team that clinched a spot in the Europa League for Sunday’s 2-0 home loss against West Ham and Maguire admits that changes have played a part in United’s poor league form.

Maguire added: “I think the last two months have been difficult because we’ve been in the Europa League and we haven’t played a settled team throughout the Premier League, the manager’s had to change a lot and we’ve had a lot of injuries, although we should be doing a lot better.”

When he was asked if they felt like two separate competitions, he replied: “It does, especially the last couple of months. But we’ve got to take the blame for that because a club like Manchester United should not have nothing to play for with two months left of the season. We’re sat in midtable and we’ve got nothing to play for. That’s our fault.

“We have to take responsibility on that because it’s unacceptable, for sure. We’ll take the blame for that and I know for a fact next season that we will improve a lot.
