Manchester United valued Marcus Rashford at £100m last summer but could now see him depart 12 months on for less than half of that with Aston Villa keen on his permanent signing

Manchester United could take a £60million loss on Marcus Rashford in the space of a year with the forward believing they may let him leave for £40m. The academy graduate is on loan at Aston Villa, but faces an uncertain future once the season ends.

The 27-year-old moved to Villa Park in February in a loan deal that included a £40m option-to-buy clause. That however does not prevent any other club signing the forward, whose time in the Midlands will come to an end on 30 June.

Rashford has rediscovered his form whilst playing under Unai Emery and that may have put him back in the shop window. He struggled to strike up a relationship with Ruben Amorim and the Manchester outfit may decide to cut their losses.

If they do their timing could cost them huge sums. Only last summer Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co slapped a £100m price tag on the forward. That figure was enough to see PSG back out of potentially signing the player, who could now leave for well below his previous market value.

United have struggled over the years to time their business right with a number of players leaving once their values had plummeted – some of them recouping no fee whatsoever.

Paul Pogba endured a mixed time at the club but interest in him often remained and he flirted with the exit door. The Red Devils often stuck to their stance that he wasn’t for sale, but he later left in the summer of 2022 for nothing when his contract expired.

Jesse Lingard was once linked with a £25m move to West Ham, but the Hammers chose not to pay the fee and the player later left for nothing. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was once valued at £40m – as per the Daily Star – but later joined Crystal Palace for half of that.

Rashford could be the latest star to leave and ultimately cost United big sums. He is unlikely to have much of a future at his boyhood club whilst Amorim is in charge with the Portuguese boss casting him out soon after arriving in Manchester.

“I couldn’t get Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it,” said the United boss after his exit. “Sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different. I wish the best to Rashford and to [Villa manager] Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.”
