Wolverhampton Wanderers top scorer Matheus Cunha is set to leave the club for Manchester United in a big-money deal after an impressive season for the Premier League side

Wolves star Matheus Cunha has given colleagues Joao Gomes and Andre a Rolex watch each ahead of his impending move to Manchester United. The Brazil international is on the verge of leaving Molineux for Old Trafford in a deal worth £62.5million, and has given thanks to his compatriots with a parting gift each.

Both players shared photos of the gifts on Instagram. Gomes also shared the personal message he received from Cunha, whose exit is expected to be made official sooner rather than later, as well as footage of Andre receiving his own gift.

“‘Thank you for all the moments, you will always be in my heart,” the message read. “I will always be in love with you and your family. I love you.'”

Andre, who was a regular in his first Wolves season, also shared a message of his own for Cunha. “I’m sure you will shine wherever you go, my friend, May God bless you and your family wherever you go,” he wrote.

The £62.5m fee represents Cunha’s release clause, which he agreed upon signing a contract extension with his current club midway through the season. United are expected to pay the sum across several instalments rather than all up front,

“What an incredible season,” Cunha wrote in a social media post of his own after the final weekend of the season. “We didn’t get to where you deserve to be, but we did everything we could to make you proud. I love these guys.

“Individually, it was the best season of my life. All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, along with @roberto_firmino and @gabriel.martinelli.

“I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over. And thank you all for all the affection. Looks good, looks fine …”

Cunha’s impending move comes despite United missing out on Champions League football. Ruben Amorim’s side finished 15th in the table, above Wolves on goal difference, after claiming victory over Aston Villa in their final match.

United had another potential route back into Europe after reaching the final of the Europa League. They fell short against Tottenham in the final, though, meaning Ange Postecoglou’s side will play in next season’s Champions League and Amorim’s men won’t have European football of any flavour.

The final day victory came against a 10-man Villa side, who saw goalkeeper Emi Martinez sent off for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund. Amad broke the deadlock, with Christian Eriksen adding a late second from the penalty spot.
