Kylian Mbappe left Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid last summer, but now PSG have captured their first ever Champions League crown in the first season without him

Kylian Mbappe was quick to congratulate Paris Saint-Germain on their first ever Champions League victory on Saturday evening.

PSG thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich to register the biggest ever winning margin in a European Cup/Champions League final. Desire Doue scored either side of half-time after teeing up Achraf Hakimi for the opener, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and substitute Senny Mayulu wrapped up the victory.

Mbappe left PSG for Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer citing the desire to win Europe’s biggest prize as one of his reasons for doing so, having been in the PSG side which lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.

Mbappe’s Real Madrid were knocked out of this season’s Champions League by Arsenal, losing 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, and the French international had some kind words for the side he left behind after their victory.

Mbappe took to his Instagram Story to write: “The big day has finally arrived. Victory and in the club’s style. Congratulations PSG.”

After the win PSG midfielder Vitinha told TNT Sports: “It means everything to the fans. I think they are the main reason we wanted to win this trophy. We wanted to win this trophy for a lot of reasons, it’s our dream, it’s everyone’s dream, it’s my dream and I’m glad we made it. It’s incredible.

“It says a lot (about this group of players compared to previous eras). It’s a very good team. The result is not by magic. We are a very good team and we are very, very happy that we did it like this, and now we’re going to celebrate.”

PSG boss Luis Enrique cut an emotional figure after the victory, and donned a t-shirt paying tribute to his daughter who sadly passed away in 2019 from a rare form of bone cancer.

TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand said: “Luis Enrique is a remarkable human being. I have been in a position where you’ve had loss and it is difficult to know how you’re going to react. He has continued and gone from strength to strength.”

Steven Gerrard added: “This team he has created and put together over the past year or two can beat you in any given way.

“The talent across this squad – it is a special group of players and they’re getting coached by a special person as well.”
