Harvey Elliott believes Cole Palmer is a better player than Florian Wirtz, with the Germany international set to join him at Liverpool this summer. The Reds are closing in on a record deal for Wirtz worth around £116million.

The 22-year-old has been convinced to join Liverpool by manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes, with the club convinced the Bayer Leverkusen star will prove he is worth every penny.

However, Elliott believes Palmer is better than Wirtz, having picked the Chelsea player over his future team-mate in a ‘winner stays on’ game. Elliott is currently in action for England at the U21 Euros and was asked by UEFA to choose between players who have previously featured at the tournament.

Elliott also opted for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao over his current Liverpool teammate Ryan Gravenberch, before opting for Palmer over Wirtz. His impending arrival will come as a blow to Elliott, who struggled for game time last season.

Wirtz plays a similar role to Elliott and he has admitted he could be forced to leave the club in search for more minutes. “It’s just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I’m coming into an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season,” he said.

“I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career because it’s a short career. You don’t know what’s going to happen.

“I need to reflect. I need to see if I’m content in doing what I’m doing and how can I improve as a player because that’s the most important thing.

“I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.

“Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it’s just about what’s best for my career.”

Elliott made just six starts across all competitions last season and has been linked with the likes of Brighton, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund. It has previously been reported that Liverpool value the midfielder at around £40m.
