Jadon Sancho is on the hunt for a new club after being exiled by Manchester United but one route away from Old Trafford might already be closed off despite the winger being up for switch

Jadon Sancho might not secure his Manchester United escape anytime soon – despite ‘agreeing’ to a move to Napoli. The England winger appears to have little future at Old Trafford after falling out of favour at the club.

The £80m man spent the second-half of the 2023/24 season back with former club Borussia Dortmund. Chelsea then moved for Sancho last season having agreed a season-long loan deal with United, with a £25m obligation to buy.

But the Blues backed out of that agreement by paying a £5m penalty fee, sending Sancho back to United in the process. The winger is unlikely to return to contention under current boss Ruben Amorim, leading to him looking for a new club.

Dortmund have turned down the chance to sign him for a third time, while Napoli have emerged as an option. Sky Sports Italy suggest that Sancho has verbally agreed a move to join the Serie A champions but there is still work to do to secure a deal.

It is suggested that the Italian giants are struggling to finance the €25m (£21.3m) asking price that the Red Devils have put on Sancho’s head, while they would also struggle to afford his £300k-per-week wage packet.

That is a similar issue to the one blighting them in their attempts to sign Manchester City star Jack Grealish. The former Aston Villa star banks a similar amount to Sancho, with it being suggested that City might have to foot around half of the bill in order to facilitate Grealish’s exit.

Either way, City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that he still looks set to leave the club. He said: “It was a conversation between him and the club and they decide. Jack is an exceptional player, the only reason why he didn’t play last season is of course my decisions, and we decide that he has to play – and the club was honest, he was honest.

“We decide the best is that he has a place that he can feel he can play and come back to be the player that he was in the year of the treble or all his career at Aston Villa; without him it would have been impossible or more difficult to achieve the treble.

“The fact is the last two seasons he hasn’t played much minutes and he has to come back to play and get the butterflies back in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.”

Meanwhile, Sancho has a decision to make regarding his own future. He has just one year remaining on his United contract having last played for the club in the Premier League August 2023.
