After Ben Shelton booked his place in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, his partner Trinity Rodman had plenty to get off her chest in a message for BBC commentator Andrew Castle
BBC commentator Andrew Castle has been slammed by Trinity Rodman for repeatedly calling her by the wrong name and for mentioning her infamous estranged father Dennis Rodman. Trinity, who is a football star for the USA women’s national team and for Washington Spirit, took to Instagram to slam the former British No. 1.
She has been at Wimbledon to support her boyfriend Ben Shelton, who faces Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. She was in the player’s box to see the world No. 10 book his place in the last-eight by overcoming Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16.
After his victory over the Italian, Trinity was unhappy with Castle’s commentary during the match. The BBC commentator repeatedly called her ‘Tiffany’ and also kept on mentioning her estranged father Dennis, a five-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls.
She took to Instagram and wrote to her 598,000 followers: “For those who don’t know… my name is TRINITY, not Tiffany. Also, for Ben’s matches, he has his family there as his support system, which includes his dad.
“My dad’s not even in MY life. No need to bring him up during HIS matches when I don’t even want him talked about during mine. It’s his and his loved ones’ moment. Thank you.”
Castle had also gone off on tangents about various anecdotes from Dennis’ career, describing him as “one of the greatest sportsmen of all time,” and “the biggest wind-up merchant of all time.”
He reminisced about Rodman’s tenacious defence against Michael Jordan during his Detroit Pistons days before teaming up with Jordan to win numerous titles with the Bulls. Meanwhile, Shelton has been causing a stir at Wimbledon with his impressive displays.
His family have been following him every step of the way at SW19, including his sister Emma, who has had to take time off work to watch him compete. Trinity and Emma were often spotted cheering together and holding hands as they supported the American athlete.
While many fans may have enjoyed the NBA nostalgia, Trinity has previously spoken openly about her complicated relationship with her father. She revealed that he struggled with alcoholism and told the Call Her Daddy podcast: “He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else.”
Trinity also shared that she had witnessed her father mistreat her mother during her childhood. Despite the pain he had caused her and her brother DJ, they were committed to protecting the reputation of the basketball Hall of Famer.
She has also opened up about the pain she felt when Dennis unexpectedly attended one of her Spirit games during her first professional season. She said she felt unsettled after hearing his voice shouting: “Let’s go, Rodman, let’s go Trinity.”
After the match, Trinity disclosed that he asked to “see her soon” once the game was over, but dodged any further conversation until after the next World Cup four years later.
