Manchester United prospects Chido Obi and Tyler Fredricson look set to be given more first-team opportunities by Ruben Amorim next season after the pair were handed new squad numbers.

Obi, 17, joined United from Arsenal’s academy last year and has been a prolific goalscorer at youth level. The striker came off the bench to make his first-team debut against Tottenham in February and went on to make seven further senior appearances.

Obi wore the No. 56 shirt last season, but has been handed the No. 32 ahead of the new campaign which has previously been worn by the likes of Carlos Tevez, Victor Valdes and Sam Johnstone.

Speaking after Obi became the youngest player to start a Premier League game for United, Amorim said: “It’s really important because you can train a lot with the first team but feeling the players, the speed of the game, I think it’s the best thing.

“Again, they did quite well. Chido fought all game but you can feel he’s really naive sometimes in the way he puts his body. He’s going to understand what is the feeling of playing in these kind of games, this is the best way. So we can take that positive.”

20-year-old defender Fredricson is an academy graduate and also made his first-team debut last season, starting in league games against Wolves and Brentford towards the end of the campaign.

Fredricson wore the No. 55 shirt last year and has now been given the No. 33, which used to belong to the likes of Brandon Williams, Bebe and Chris Eagles, and Amorim has previously spoken highly of the centre-back.

“He’s really composed, he’s really humble,” Amorim told MUTV ahead of Fredricson’s debut. “Every training with the first team, he’s really focused on every detail of training. He’s really good on the ball. So it’s a good opportunity for him.”

United have also given new squad numbers to five other players. New signing Matheus Cunha has taken the No. 10, with previous holder Marcus Rashford expected to leave the club this summer.

Diogo Dalot, meanwhile, has swapped the No. 20 for the No. 2 after Victor Lindelof’s departure. Teenagers Shea Lacey, Bendito Mantato and Reece Munro have also been given new numbers, taking 61, 70 and 65 respectively.
