Leeds United have sealed their fifth summer signing with the arrival of Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff. The 27-year-old has joined the Whites for an initial £12million, with a further £3m in potential add-ons.

Longstaff has inked a four-year deal at Elland Road, having been a major target for the newly-promoted side, who had three bids turned down by the Magpies before an agreement was finally reached.

Longstaff, who joined Leeds’ Premier League rivals at the age of nine, has made 214 appearances for the Magpies, hitting 16 goals. He played 32 times for Eddie Howe’s men last term as they lifted the Carabao Cup and finished fifth in the league to secure Champions League qualification – but was largely used as a substitute.

“I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I got a feeling that they really wanted me,” Longstaff told LUTV. “It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club – similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways.

“It was going to take a lot for me to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn’t just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place.

“Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing, it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play, and [I’m] just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against.”

Newcastle said: “Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Sean for his outstanding contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

With 171 appearances in the top flight, Longstaff brings crucial Premier League pedigree to Daniel Farke’s squad following their promotion from the Championship as champions. Longstaff becomes Leeds’ fifth new addition, following Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bournauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson. His arrival takes their summer spending to around £45m.

A sixth may not be far away, as Leeds are continuing to work towards a deal for Hoffenheim star Anton Stach.

Farke’s side begin their Premier League campaign at home to Everton on August 18.
