Liverpool owner’s FSG are in talks over the £100m takeover of La Liga side Getafe as they look to begin a multi-club model – similar to the set-up the Manchester City owners currently enjoy.

The Americans have been in charge at Anfield for well over a decade and, despite some contentious decisions, have made the club a Premier League-winning force again and presided over some stunning redevelopment of their infrastructure.

The Athletic claim that talks are underway between FSG and Getafe’s president Angel Torres over the takeover of the club. Torres though has denied that publicly and previously stated that he valued the Madrid-based club closer to £160m, but he has now eased on that figure.

FSG have undergone feasibility studies of several clubs which included Levante, Elche, Espanyol, Valladolid, Malaga and Bordeaux. But they eventually settled on Getafe and saw a number of green flags following their review.

They enjoy a status as an established top flight club whilst their location in Madrid was also a factor in them jumping to the top of the queue. Getafe are also in the midst of a stadium redevelopment, which will modernise and take their Estadio Coliseum to a capacity of 19,000.

FSG’s desire to land another club was thought to be crucial in Michael Edwards choosing to return to Liverpool in a senior role and he is central in identifying what team to go after. He previously said, after re-joining the Reds as FSG’s chief executive of football, that “one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation.”

Edwards is spearheading the search alongside former Boston Red Sox chief Theo Epstein. Reports earlier this year suggested FSG were pursuing a deal to buy Malaga, but that interest cooled as it emerged that they would need to negotiate a number of legal hurdles.

Getafe have been a La Liga club for the past eight seasons and finished 13th last term. The upcoming season will mark Getafe’s the 21st season out of the last 22 that the club have been in the Spanish top flight. In that time they have played in the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League.

Their owner, Torres, has admitted he will leave the club when the stadium redevelopment is complete in December 2027. In the Premier League several clubs have owners involved in multi-club networks with Manchester United, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest among them.
