Harry Maguire has suggested he is open to extending his stay at Manchester United but says discussions over a new contract may not take place for another few months.

The defender, who joined from Leicester City six years ago in an £80million deal, said that while he has a clear idea over his own ambitions, he remains focused on the present and is encouraged by the changes being made behind the scenes having entered the final year of his current deal.

Maguire, speaking after United lost their Premier League opener to Arsenal, has also hailed the return of a feelgood factor to the dressing room after last season’s stinker when they finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Over the next few months they’ll sit down and we’ll have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend,” Maguire said. “I have something in my mind about what I want to do and what I want to be. It’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.”

Maguire praised the influence of technical director Jason Wilcox and the current management team. And he feels confident that the club is being steered in the right direction after a difficult previous campaign.

“The hierarchy has come in, with Jason and the manager, and I feel like they’re taking it in the right direction,” he said. “Since I started six years ago to now, it’s in a completely different place in terms of the structure behind the management staff. We’re in a good place. A lot better place.”

Reflecting on last season’s struggles, the England international admitted morale had been low as the team slipped out of contention domestically. But he believes this year will bring a stronger challenge in the Premier League.

“Last season was so tough – February, March time, we’ve got nothing to play for. It was really tough,” Maguire added.

“Apart from the Europa League, everyone was focusing on that. But then when you get beat in the Premier League, it still piles down on you. So this season you’re going to see a lot more competition from us in the Premier League.”
