Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday and Spurs fans sang about their Europa League victory during the game, prompting Phil Foden to burst out laughing while on the bench

Phil Foden burst out laughing after hearing a Tottenham chant

Phil Foden burst out laughing while he was sat on the bench during Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, with the England international appearing to find a chant about Spurs’ Europa League victory funny.

Tottenham continued their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha, with City goalkeeper James Trafford at fault for Spurs’ second.

Trafford played a risky pass to Nico Gonzalez, who immediately lost the ball under pressure from Pape Matar Sarr and Palhinha promptly fired home. Shortly after Palhinha’s goal, TV cameras panned over to the City bench and the likes of Jeremy Doku, Ederson and Matheus Nunes looked on stone-faced.

However, Foden burst out laughing after Tottenham fans began chanting: “Champions of Europe, we know what we are”. Tottenham are Europa League champions, having beaten Manchester United 1-0 in the final, while Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League.

Foden was introduced off the bench in the second half, but he was unable to help City turn things around and Pep Guardiola was left bemoaning the face his side “missed the simple things”.

He said: “The game against Spurs this season was a lot of build up and man marking like against Brentford in the past. You have to play in a different way. We spoke about that. We missed the simple things.

“I never asked them to play exceptional things. The first was about effort to run and that was extraordinary like it has been for many years. I don’t have doubts. Last season, we didn’t achieve but in the training we were really good.

“In the pressure, we missed simple things and then we create enough chances but it’s happened, it’s football. It’s just the second game. Last game against Wolves, everyone said everything it’s fine and I said it’s just one game and a lot is going to happen.

“I know how we are working and what the players are doing. There are many good things but we have to improve. Step by step we will improve and make more connections.” City defender Ruben Dias added: “Spurs are a team who can be very dangerous, they started the game very well.

“We didn’t react the best way in sticking to our game. The second goal is unfortunate, it cannot happen. We chased but there was a lot of things to do better. Not everything was good in our first game and not everything is bad now so we have to get back to work.

“It’s frustrating, we want to win even more at home in front of our fans in our first home game. It is what it is, it’s football and we look forward.”
