Manchester Ubited are winless across their first two Premier League matches of the new season and questions are being asked with seven days of the transfer window to go

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville maintained the continued struggles of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir should worry Ruben Amorim’s side. Bayindir was at fault for Arsenal’s winner on the opening weekend of the season and had another nervy moment against Fulham on Sunday.

Turkish international Bayindir flapped at a corner again at Craven Cottage. On this occasion, striker Rodrigo Muniz was unable to take advantage, but that didn’t stop Neville from worrying.

“It is not a good look for Bayindir this – United need to sort this as it is not going to go away,” Sky Sports commentator and pundit Neville said. “He is 27 years old, which is not young for a goalkeeper and it puts pressure on your defence when your ‘keeper is flapping like that.”

The scores were level at the time of the nervy moment for Bayindir, after Bruno Fernandes skied a penalty for United. The game ended all-square, with Emile Smith Rowe’s equaliser cancelling out a Muniz own goal.

United sit 16th in the table with just one point from their two matches. Last season’s first-choice keeper Andre Onana was back on the bench after missing out entirely against Arsenal, but a new number one could yet arrive in the next seven days.

Italy and Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had emerged as a surprise target, only for Manchester City to join the chase for the Champions League winner. Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens could end up being United’s man, and the young Belgian sat out his team’s Sunday afternoon win.

Lammens’ form for Antwerp last season earned him a first senior Belgium call-up in March, but he was absent for the match against Mechelen over the weekend. Antwerp ended the game with 10 men after former Leicester midfielder Dennis Praet was sent off, but they still won 2-1 to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

“I am focused on our goalkeepers,” United boss Ruben Amorim told Match of the Day after his team’s draw in West London. “Like every manager I look at the amount of training, what I see in pre-season, in the games and try to decide who is the best goalkeeper to use in a game and I am going to continue to do that.”

“You can look at it both sides,” he said when asked about Bayindir being targeted at corners. “We have a goal with a goal kick, we have two situations where we could manage to score, a penalty and the corner kick. In every game in the Premier League, you will always have situations in the corners.”

United have one more league match to go before deadline day. After a League Cup trip to Grimsby in midweek, they will welcome Burnley to Old Trafford on Saturday with former United loanee Martin Dubravka starting the Clarets’ first two games between the sticks.
