Manchester United have reportedly set a 48-hour deadline to make a decision about Kobbie Mainoo’s future. The midfielder has yet to play a single minute so far this season, with Ruben Amorim preferring the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte ahead of him.

Mainoo has been an unused substitute in United’s first two Premier League games, with Amorim stating that he is directly competing with Fernandes for a spot in the team. “Mainoo is fighting for his position with Bruno,” he said.

“I changed two midfielders, I left Mason Mount there because we wanted to score a goal and when I changed, I felt the team needed one holding midfielder. So he needs to fight for his position with Bruno. At the moment he is fighting in training with Bruno for the position.”

According to the Daily Mail, Mainoo has become ‘frustrated over his peripheral role’ under Amorim and is open to leaving United for a club in the Champions League before the transfer window slams shut this summer.

The report claims that ten clubs have registered their interest in Mainoo, with talks over a new deal for the England international having stalled, and United are expected to make a decision on the situation in the next 48 hours.

United have spent more than £200million so far this summer to bring in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, but they have struggled to offload players. Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released after their contracts expired, while Jonny Evans retired.

Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan with an option buy with the La Liga giants covering his wages in full, but United are yet to offload the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Rasmus Hojlund.

“It’s not an idea that ‘these players are going to leave and then we’ll receive another player’,” Amorim said when asked for an update on United’s transfer business ahead of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

“We don’t know what is going to happen but we are not waiting to take out someone to bring another player [in]. One thing is not responsible for the other.

“The players you’re talking about are not players who are training with the group in this moment. We have a group training so it’s not going to affect a lot.”
