West Ham suffered a third defeat on the spin on Tuesday, losing to Wolves in the Carabao Cup as substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen at Molineux, before Jarrod Bowen confronted his own fans at full-time

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has apologised for heading over to confront the Hammers’ fans after their Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Wolves. Team-mates Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Areola were seen holding Bowen back as the skipper appeared set to climb over advertising hoardings to approach the visiting supporters at full-time, while stewards also got involved.

Graham Potter’s side had lost in painful fashion at Molineux. They led 2-1 heading into the final 10 minutes at Molineux, only for substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen to scored a quickfire brace to turn the game on its head.

While TV cameras didn’t pick up what was said as Bowen clashed with fans, the England international has now issued a statement. “Apologies to the fans for tonight’s reaction,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I’m someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club!”

He added: “We ride through the bad times together and I’ll see you all Sunday.” That’s when West Ham resume their season with an away trip to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

“No, I don’t know what was said,” West Ham boss Potter said of the incident. “Everybody’s hurting, rightly so because we’ve not had the results we’d like.

“That’s normal. Jarrod is a fantastic captain and servant for the club. It was just an exchange of views by people who care about the club. The most important relationship at the club is between the fans and the team. The fans are the most important people.”

Going into Tuesday’s game at Molineux, West Ham and Wolves were the only Premier League teams to lose both league games so far this season. While Vitor Pereira’s side have given themselves something to build on, the misery continues for Potter’s men.

“I believe that we can [gain momentum] because I know the work that they are doing every day, day by day in training, and I feel that we have players with character, and I know the quality of our work. I know when we have the true spirit in a team, when you create the spirit, we can win games,” Pereira said.

“We can create this energy inside the pitch, outside the pitch, a connection between them and the supporters, and I’m happy. The next game will be important. I hope the supporters come again to help us, because we are a club that is not the top club in the league, but we are a good club, and with organisation and with spirit, we can get results.”
